It sounds like it is the knuckle hardness. If all else fails, try needling the knuckle from the sides (without changing it's shape too much) and see if that has an effect. If nothing else, it will help you to confirm that it is the knuckle material. I have worked on many of these since I've worked for a Kimball dealer for over ten years and I do not see this unless the knuckles have had something like graphite added to them. I have seen it on new Young Changs a lot and have "voiced" them for the time being.
