Hames, have you considered making a cube, say 15"x16"18", that a student
can rotate to the height that best suits them?  These can be made rather
inexpensively out of 1/2" plywood, finished in various ugly colors and
hope they last a year or two before getting totally wrecked.

The have the advangate of being adjustable, sturdy, difficult to steal,
painted ugly to help prevent theft, inexpensive, rapidly fabricated,
with no legs to break (or rails or stiles or corner brackets) when they
lean against the walls on them.

I got the idea from something similar being used by dancers.
