I have seen height variations as much as 11 mm.  I taper bored the
hammers and the regulation was easy and very precise.  Boring the
hammers like that was a pain, but same many later pains.

Variations do occur, due to casting variations and curing activity. 
Cast iron is not at all like a machined piece of steel.  

It is our job to accommodate to the casting, as does the factory.
