Equal temperament is so accepted because it allows all keys to sound the
same.  For people who believe that a key's sound should not be fixed and
that all keys should be interchangeable, equal does the job.  For those who
feel that keys should each have a distinctive color, HTs would probably fit
the bill more.  But, you couldn't write twelve tone music in an HT because
all the relationships between notes are presumed to be equal in twelve tone
music.  I also wonder how something like Mahler or Reger would sound in an HT.
