It doesn't much matter what happens to the edge support. Crown is formed and
maintained by the ribs. Before it's ever installed in the piano, the ribs
are glued to the panel and the crown is formed in the process. If the rim
was supporting the crown, crown would not be evident until the assembly was
glued onto the rim. That is not the case.
