I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "whipping", but if it involves removing the string, I doubt if it is worth the trouble. As an alternative, I have found that simply lowering the tension on the string and pulling it back up to pitch while wailing on the key can make a noticeable improvement with just a nominal amount of time cost. The only effect of this that I don't like is that while brightening the tone also introduces a strange harmonic mix to the string.
