variable playing weight

In Frank Dietz's book _Steinway Regulation_, he makes the following
statemtent, "...In conclusion I should like to mention that a pedal or
button celeste and a variable playing weight can be built into all Steinway
models on request."

Has anyone ever come across one of these, and if so, can you describe how
it works?
