If you took the height measurements you can have a set of hammers bored
for a new set of shanks and hang them on the job.  If you did not get
the measurement of the angles of the strings to the stetcher you can ask
the customer to make thease measurements at the beginning and ends of
the bass and middle sections so the hammers can be properly bored.

It is always better to set the hammer to fit the treble to get the best
sound.

When setting 88 you can wet the shank and/or the hammer hole to get a
tight fit.  Place the action in the box and check the sound by moving
the action inand out until you get the best sound.  Mark the key bed and
then replace the keyblock.  If the action moved mark the second location
and move the hammer accordingly.  Once you have the hammer perfectly
located mark the shank on both sides of the hammer so you can relocate
it perfectly.  Glue it on and do the same for the bottom and top of the
next section down.  I have used this technique as far down as about A5.
By the time you get that far down you should have a good idea of where
the rest of the hammers need to be located.

I would not worry about the sound of the middle section strings if you
have been plucking them in the middle of their length.  You will be
loosing all the higher harmonics.  Check the sound as close to the
strike point for sound evaluation.

I always prefer to locate hammers by sound and not rely of previous
installs because even in the factory mistakes are made.
