Hi List!

This is intended for those of you landing at Logan Airport in Boston and
wanting to get to Providence from there by surface transit.

I have mentioned before that trains going to Providence start at South
Station on the Red Line. To get to South Station from the airport:
Massport shuttle from the terminal to the subway station (Blue Line).
Blue Line to State, cross over to southbound Orange Line.
Orange Line 1 stop to Downtown Crossing, cross over to southbound Red Line
					-or-
Blue Line to Government Center, cross over to westbound Green Line.
Green Line 1 stop to Park Street, cross over to southbound Red Line.

Last I knew the Massport shuttle was free, and the subway was $0.85 with
free transfers as long as you didn't leave the stations. If you're feeling
fit and energetic and you have your luggage on wheels, you could walk to
South Station from Government Center, State, or Aquarium (Blue Line). It's
maybe a mile at most from any of these subway stations. To walk to the
South Station from the airport would entail walking across the mouths of
the Charles and Mystic Rivers.

I haven't mentioned taxis here because they are liable to get caught in
traffic. The same goes for buses. There's a LOT of construction going on
in that part of Boston as they build another tunnel under the harbor and
take down the overhead expressways. If you're interested in a thrill-ride
and an in-your-face approach to Boston driving, then by all means treat
yourself to a taxi ride. Just don't be surprised that it may take you
longer to get to South Station by road than it would by subway, even with 2
transfers.

Hint: Just keep this axiom in mind -- the slower and more congested the
traffic, the more frequent the subways. At rush hour, it is a common sight
to see one subway after another roar through the stations, sometimes only
seconds apart.

For up-to-the-minute details on Boston's public transit system, check out
their web site at <http://www.mbta.com>. You might also want to check out
Amtrak's website at <http://www.amtrak.com> to check the schedule for
trains running between South Station (BOS) and Providence (PVD). Keep in
mind that the train station in Providence is listed as being just 117 feet
from the Convention Center.

Looking forward to it all --
