It is not necessarily the same distance from the edge of the bridge because the bridge doesn't necessarily follow the curve required by the determined speaking lengths, especially across section breaks at plate struts. Pianos with vertically laminated bridge bodies will show more deviation here than cut out bridges because you can cut a sharper curve than you can bend. The back notch is placed where there is room for it on the bridge, in from the edge far enough to get the pins well into the body of the bridge. It's a lot easier to see than to describe.
