Gluing understringing felt

I've researched the archives regarding burnt shellac. If it were
something that I could pick up at my local home center/hardward store, I
would be inclinced to use it. What would be an acceptable alternative
for gluing understringing felt to the plate (old upright). How about
PVC-E or auto weather-stripping contact cement?
