There's the story in my family (which several generations back was 
pivotal in the Vermont machine tool industry), of a Minister of Industry 
from some E. European country being met at the ocean liner in NYC by a 
representative from the Springfield VT company with which this this 
country was about to do significant business. The visitor marveled, "If 
this is what NYC is like, Springfield VT must be a REALLY big city."
