I've been using a 1" belt sander...Remove the hammer, shank and 
flange and simply run one side along and turn it over and do the 
other side.  This is by eye but the belt sander doesn't remove 
wood to fast.  Do one at a time and your hammer to string 
alignment won't be off much.  When removing weight from heavy 
hammers on an existing action I use the same tool.   I always 
thin the shanks at the same time.   It is a little tricky with 
the angled hammers but haven't had a problems.
