I have had tremendous success with steaming hammers. The technique I use (taught at a PTG meeting) is to use a kitchen style steam pot (I use the Rival Hot Pot Express model 4070 $12.99 at Wal-Mart). This electric pot has a wide mouth. You simply rotate the hammer part-way into the mouth of the pot and remove it immediately. You don't even pause, you just dip it in the steam and out in one smooth motion. I would guess about 1/2 a second is all the exposure it gets. It works wonders, especially here in dry Colorado.
