Just a quick clarification of the heat gun suggestion.  What I do is point it
at the plastic for a few seconds and then test how gooey it is by trying to
pull it off.  If it's the right temparature, it'll stretch a bit and then
pull right off.  No mess at all.  And there are no fumes or smoke.  Worth a
try in some situations.
