Phil, Clamp a vise-grip to the wire next to the old elbow then crunch it with a needle nose or cut with a side cutter. When you put the new plastic elbow on the wire, hold the elbow in one hand and the wire in the other and swing the vise-grip around so that its' weight does the work of screwing the wire into the elbow instead of your hand.
