I have not had any problem with the looping machine I have. I don't remember if it from American or Schaff. I don't use it often either. But as I recall if you apply too much pressure to the clamp while cranking the winding will not form well. Also if you end it up by twisting the loop too tight (round instead of tear-drop shape) it will break. So a feel has to be developed to twist the wire without stressing it. The last few quarter grands had all tie-offs and not one broke. If a piano has a few tie-off, I do them a mano. Jon Page Harwich Port, Cape Cod, Mass.
