Go with the better block, though you might try resawing a standard
pinblock blank and then planing it to final thickness. That way you'll
have a another pinblock of the correct thickness for the next one you
do.

Sounds like a fun project.

If you want to take the time to measure the scale, I sure like to look
at it. I'd be happy to run a new one for you just for the learning of
it.
