First pull out the wedges! The will suppress the board's ability to vibrate. The check the bearing and crown. Pluck strings in the area of trouble and if you get the same sound as the hammers produce it is a board problem. If the sound is much better by plucking with a guitar pick then the hammers need work or replacement. If the piano still has those green things for hammers replace them immediatly with almost anything to get a better sound. Do not forget that the hammers are hung at 89 degress to the shank, not 90 degress. The tension resonator is intended to keep the case from moving outwards, thus loosing crown. I would call Mason & Hamlin and ask for directions for adjusting it their way. I have a sixties CC that sounded like something even the cat would not bring in. I replaced the hammers with a set of Isaac's and the sound just explodes out to the very back of the hall. Newton nhunt@rci.rutgers.edu
