Richard and list - "On Pitch" is published by the Piano Technicians' Guild, and is available from the home office. Member price is $20. I've learned that the book is based on a series of articles that Rick Baldassin wrote for the Journal in the late 80s (?). It details the equivalence of aural tuning and electronic tuning tests for octave tuning. It is comprehensive and creative in its organization and simplicity. In no way simple minded, the book is a guide to optimizing the tuning of a given piano once a good temperament has been set. I've tuned aurally for nearly 25 years. I've used the Baldassin-Sanderson temperament since it became widely known. Mr. Jim Coleman, Sr. has been discussing the temperament in the last few days on pianotech (THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!!). Please see his posts for details on setting the temperament. After that's done, then Rick's book kicks in for completing the tuning with the most breath-taking and confident results that anyone could hope for. The combination of temperament and octave tuning results in absolute clarity to the process of tuning. No longer one of the "black arts," tuning becomes a scientific exercise that can be adjusted to the vagaries of a given piano, and to the aural vision (mangled metaphor?) that the tuner brings to his/her work. One can also demonstrate same for the customer, leading to their appreciation of the time and effort that the tuner has put into mastering the craft, opening the door for one to charge commensurately.
