There will be a booth at the Dearborn Convention this July 17 manned by Associate Member Tom Lloyd and renegade tuner Benjamin Treuhaft where attendees can learn about Send a Piana to Havana. We have photos, videos and music, and would like to offer Cuban dulces, or snacks (would samples of the rum and cigars be permissible?). Seven pianos have been distributed to Cuban schools and musicians in what so far has been a wildly successful project to inject U.S. pianos, supplies and technology into Cuba in spite of the political problems between our government and theirs. The project venue, a former country club in Western Havana, contains 15 more project pianos, most of which need a bit of work. Also there, almost a ton of parts donated by generous PTG members last fall. We will accept donations of parts or cash, suggestions about the project, or - most importantly - offers to come down and help out. There are many ways, both legal and not-so, to get across that gulf. Global Exchange (globalexch@igc.apc.org) would even set up a tour if enough tuners were interested.
