This is why we have progress. There is now available from Dampp-Chaser a "fail save" humidifier.
It turns off the humdifier if the wicks are dry.

When I was a professional violinist one of my friends had played in the Dallas Orchestral. The
strings players there were very concerned about lack of humidity in the Winter.
