strange nuts?

Audrey,

Here's an idea.  Since I'm sure you have tha appropriate taps to chase the
threads after removal, why not drill an appropriate hole in a small piece of
brass or steel, thread the piece and use it as a nut.  This way you can have
whatever size plate you need to clean up your threads after shortening the
stem.  Let us know if this works.
