Mr. Kiddell raised an interesting point, re uneven unison string lengths.  In
the late 1800 and early 1900 some of the better piano makers intentionally used
skewed unison lengths to give 'color' to the notes.  Steinway made C and D
models scaled so.

Using the center string for scaling purposes is the proper approach.
