  The simplest way is to mark the locations on the plate using a razor blade.
 Mark the bottom (edge toward keys) and one side. Like this, ____|. I usually
mark the locations right after I remove a section.  Depending on how much,
cleaning sanding, etc., you do on the plate your marks need not be too deep.
If you make your marks thin enough they will not be visible when you restring
the piano, but still be visible through any new gilding.
