Often the sound you describe improves dramatically if the hammers are moved in on the shanks a little, and the non-shifted sound either also improves or doesn't get any worse. The limit is reached when the non-shifted sound begins to degrade. Try it out by drawing the action out slightly. That sound also sometimes means the hammers are a little heavier than the originals. Check one's strike weight compared to an original, if you still have them. Bob Davis
