Hi, Avery,
      Yes, dampers can get hard quickly, if it is bad felt or if the felt has
been mistreated by weatgher, technician or spills, but as you said the noise
occurs at the attack time.
      My best guess is someone else's post, to wit, something on the
soundboard or something resonating with something loose, like a couple of nuts
I know.
      If you filter and post all our suggestions the local tech should be
able to isolate and resolve the problem.
