That was a good and well thoughtout post, David, but you did not mention grain
orientation.  The grain of the leather needs to be oriented so that the heel
goes into check easily and comes out with difficulty.  This enhances checking
and reduces noise.

One suggestion; if you have a bandsaw you can use double sticky tape to hold
the leather onto a scrap piece of wood or plywood and cut your strips using
this method.  It works well with cloth as well.
