"Dear everyone, " I got this tip from Mr. Kasimoff in Los Angeles. When changing the string "on a harpsicord that has alot of winding on the tuning pin it is better to "take the pin out, wrap the string around it, put a couple of drops of pin "tightner in the hole and reinstall the pin. "Doug Hershberger, RPT Dear Doug, I sure hope you get the permission of the owner before putting any kind of chemical in the tuning pin hole. No matter how many positive comments you see about tuning pin dope on this or any other forum, it is to be used only advisedly and carefully and with full knowledge and permission of the owner of the instrument. The effects of the chemical are permanent, progressive and not always positive. The glycerine in attracting moisture to the wood also makes sure that there is moisture against the iron tuning pin. How much rust over how much time is acceptable in a harpsichord much less a piano. I think the tuning pin dope is acceptable in certain last case situations where just the continuation of use is the minimum necessary justification. Outside of that, well be careful.
