Jim B., Ed, Newton, Ken, David, et al, Thanks to all for responding to my question about damper underlever helper springs on the Steinway 'L'. I'll be starting the job next week and your suggestions are going to be a BIG help. She is a teacher as well as a pianist, so I'm going to have to do the work in a fairly tight time frame. Your suggestions will help eliminate some time wasted experimenting. This is my first time doing this, so again, my heartfelt thanks to the people on this list for being willing to help. To answer one question Newton asked, the dampers *are* lifting almost immediately with the keys. But I also feel the helper springs are too strong because I didn't even think about there being springs until I removed the action and started lifting the levers individually. So the combination of both is really making the action feel heavy. I will also check for other friction while the assembly is out and will also replace the key end felts. Many thanks, y'all! Avery P.S. And then, among other problems, there's the 3" long leg brace screw on the bass end which goes up into the action! _____________________________________ Avery Todd, RPT Moores School of Music University of Houston Houston, TX 77204-4893 713-743-3226 atodd@uh.edu _____________________________________
