Bob Simmons inquired about replacing hammer butt springs in a vertical. In the 7/89 issue of the PTJournal, pages 18-21, is an article I wrote about springs in vertical actions which includes tips on hammer butt spring installation. This article was reprinted in the Journal Reprint Series in the General Repair book, on sale through the PTG Home Office. Also, it is worth mentioning that if the piano is of recent manufacture, a rail with springs installed is readily available from the manufacturers. Sometimes it is quicker to modify a purchased rail than to put the new springs on the original. Fern Henry, RPT
