Dead Bass Strings

I have a customer who called a day or two after spilling some "water" on her
Yamaha bass strings.  She claimed she had only spilled water, but by the time
new strings arrived a sticky residue was showing up around the agraffs and on
some of the strings.  I believe she really spilled 7-up or Sprite as was too
embarassed to admit it.

If soft drinks were spilled on the strings, I would expect it to show up as
quickly as the water content evaporated and left the sticky syrup (probably a
matter of hours after the spill).
