How fast can contaminiation kill a bass strings?
Any thoughts? Sympathy?

Paul, could the contamination have come from a well-meaning
custodian with a spray can of finish cleaner. With the front half of
the lid folded back, overspray (or a bad aim) could put the
cleaner onto the dampers and strings.
