Since the opinions expressed thus far on this subject seem to have been unanimous, I will just have to take the opposing view. Granted, my views on this are significantly less strong than the use/not use of action rail cloth, and anyway, the finer quality leather has napp fine enough to work well either way. The obvious observation though, and really the only grounds for my opposing view, is that most of our performance pianos (in this country anyway) have parts made by a manufacturer who always orients the leather grain to go with the let off. Right or wrong, this is what both Steinway and Renner do. Does anyone take them off and turn them around? I sure don't. Dennis Johnson St. Olaf College johnsond@stolaf.edu
