Moving Pianos Singlehandedly

I have moved Steinway Bs, Ms and Mason & Hamlin As for Humboldt State University Music Dept. for years before retirement to prepare for Summer Workshops. The moving of six pianos required four to six hours. Tuning came later.
The moves were all on the level between two buildings (with one exception) and were done with Selpo truck and carefully tipped on the lyres all of which remained solid which were padded to the floor by raising the bass corner with a screw jack , and with the heip of a padded two by four strapped to the top and estended beyond the straight side enough so that the board cleared the floor when the bass corner touched the truck. The board took some of the strain from the lyre with its lifting action. Then the angled piano was easily raised to the vertical plsition to be strapped to the truck. The Selpo truck was an excellent adjunct for our dept. needs.
I eventually (1972) made a curved panel one inch thick and ¼ circle from the bottom of the lyre to the bass side with the pivit point at the junction of the lyre and bottom surface of the action cage. Then the two by four was no longer necessary and took all the lateral strain off of the lyre. Also the curve was scalloped to facillitate holding the piano at any angle from level to 45 degrees.
The S&S D had to be moved standing over an outside ramp but on a grand dolly to the Theater Stage. At 150 lbs without help I could just barely raturn the piano up the ramp to the Music Dept.
I can recommend establishing a reputation for capability but it becomes difficult to enlist help from any quarter.
