I always suspected that it was less experiment than someone in the factory looking on the shelf and saying, "Hey, cool! I didn't know we had any more of these!"

Curious. I have a 1965 BB at UNM, and it has standard brass. Not something I would have thought Aeolian of the time would have experimented with.
