It might not just be the width of the sharp that she is feeling. Pianists can also feel the slight differences in the width of all the keys. My first encounter with this was when I had a pianist with both a Steinway and Forester Grand in her living room. I hadn't noticed, but said the German piano has narrower keys than the Steinway. When I got back to my store, I measured an octave on all the grands I had on the floor, including new Asian made models, and American made used ones of various ages. I had a hard time finding two pianos with exactly the same key width.

All,

Recently a client said she was sure that Hamburg sharps were narrower on the top than NY Steinways. The measurements I have taken seem to conform that the Hamburg sharps are about .005” narrower. Is this right? How could she feel that little difference?

P.S. Yes, I have asked Jim and he says “ I dunno.”
