Hello folks, This announcement came in for posting on the CAUT website: James Madison University, ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PIANO TECHNICIAN James Madison University is seeking an experienced and well qualified piano tuner and technician. The School of Music has an inventory of approximately 144 Steinway pianos, including approximately 48 grands. JMU has been an "All-Steinway" School since 2005, and the vast majority of the inventory has been purchased since that time. Thus, the current condition of nearly the entire inventory is either new or almost new. The successful applicant should have significant training and expertise, in maintenance, tuning, rebuilding and repairs of grand pianos. Steinway certification and training in these areas is a very big plus. Secondarily, the applicant should have experience in the tuning of and minor repairs on upright pianos. The applicant should have a minimum of 5 years full-time experience, either as an institutional/corporate technician/tuner or in private practice, and should also have ability to work quickly and precisely, and to communicate well with faculty and staff members. This is a full-time staff position. Because JMU has an active piano faculty and because the School of Music hosts a heavy performing schedule of student, faculty, and guest concerts, the primary focus of this position to maintain at the highest level the performing pianos and piano faculty studio pianos. Money is available for help with tuning uprights and practice room pianos. James Madison University and its School of Music are located in the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley of northwestern Virginia, and about 120 miles from both Washington, DC and Richmond. JMU is a nationally top-ranked comprehensive state university, with very high admission standards, that draws out-of-state students from around the country, and especially from the Northeast. This past year there were 22,000 applications for 4,000 freshman/transfer positions. JMU has a full-time faculty of about 900, and about 17,000 full-time students. The School of Music has 45 full-time and 20 part-time faculty members, and 450+ majors. The School also has highly selective admissions; this year 455 students auditioned for the 110 freshman positions. The School offers B.M., M.M., and D.M.A. degrees, and is housed in a modern music building with extensive and appropriate practice, rehearsal and office space, and modern musical and technological equipment. The new $95 million Forbes Center for Performing, which for the School contains two recital/concert halls and additional office, rehearsal and practice facilities, has just opened. James Madison University has the largest and most prestigious public university music program in Virginia, and the School of Music's director is always Virginia's representative to the National Association of Music Executives at State Universities (NAMESU). The School of Music is an All-Steinway School, and has its own concert series at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
