The Canon S 5 IS has 2 different close up settings and is a very good camera. If you want something more serious, a digital single lens reflex would be a good choice too, but a lot bulkier. And then you 'll need a close up lens or close up filter.

 

Yes, you could use a magnifier over the lens as this is what close up filters are, high quality magnifiers.

 

Or, you can use a program to crop the picture to get only what you want. All depends on the quality of finished picture you are looking for. For web like this forum, you don't need extra high definition. You will be sizing down the pictures anyway.

I haven't tried it, but someone in the comments section said they used a magnifying glass with their camera.

Off topic a bit but what are the requirements on the camera to get that type of close up shot so clear.  I’m shopping for a new digital right now, mine sucks.
