I think the most glaring example is when you go into a home where a piano was bought new 5 or more years ago and never tuned, much less had any screws tightened. You find it 40 - 50 cents below pitch, and occasionally you'll run into one with screws loose enough that you've got hammers flopping all over the place. That's a dealer avoiding the prep issue. (and yes, the first couple of years of settling are part of prep, regardless of whether the cost is completely on the customer or partly borne by the dealer. I think, too, this is somewhat perpetuated by some of the manufacturer's who have developed a reputation of making claims that their brand doesn't require as much service as others. 
That's really the point.

  I guess I'm not really getting your point.  It seems like you're saying that there are a lot of players but that two of those players (manufacturers and dealers) aren't stepping up to do their part.
