I worked with Mr Previn and Bernstein, who I believe was the first to play with pitch altering, they both expressed that by raising the pitch the harmonic system was providing an edge to "their" sound.

A friend of a friend is a violinist with the LA Philharmonic, and he said Andre Previn got them started on A442 years ago. As Fred points out, all the woodwind players had to buy new instruments as a result.
I didn't get any specific answer as to what the benefit was, musically.
