Re: [CAUT] How long to stabilize??Definitely paying a lot of attention to that v-bar when you restring.  Have had good luck with several heavy use pianos that are in good shape otherwise but have this problem.

Get educated and approach these University problems with confidence.  It is amazing how budgets can grow when they start seeing results and have faith in you!

   I did purchase two of the CAUT Guidelines--one for the store and another for the college.  I have also downloaded a copy for myself and the stage manager.  I sat in on some of the initial research meetings for the guidelines and used to have a copy of the original, but haven't been able to find it since our move.
   
  I thought I remembered that it gave time and use suggestions for various types of maintenance?  Now there is just a formula for how many technicians the institution has to hire?
   
  Another reason I would like time and use suggestions for maintenance is for a family whose two sons are practicing a used Schimmel grand at least 4 hours a day.  The eldest has just won a music teacher's competition and is preparing to perform a selection by Lizst with the symphony in a couple of months. 
   
  I haven't been able to convince the parents to have the hammers reshaped.  The boys are breaking strings in the top treble section, about once every six months, and the  older boy is complaining about the voicing.  I thought if I could show them some authoritative information about piano service, they might be more likely to maintain it better.  Right now they are blaming the store for selling them a bad piano.

  Good luck with a difficult education project Diane. Download the CAUT Guidelines and learn to use them. That will be your best weapon. The folks that you are working for need to be lead in to the 21st century, the light of day and stop sticking their heads in the sand. Reality bites. There just aren't enough cliches. Climate control (comlete systems) and more frequent maintenance, sorry there are no substitutes or magic bullets.
