Alan,

This opening sentence is priceless. The logic of "guest artists" and public view are strong too. Thanks.

Regards,
Yet another invisible yet moody tech!

Jim,

Simply put, a concert instrument that is used for practice soon comes to feel and sound like a practice room instrument. The question to put to the powers that be is how important to the university and/or music department are the very public concerts as marketing tools or recruiting tools or image makers? How important are the guest artists who come to play on your "practice concert grand?" It's very much like those folks, who upon hearing a fantastic performance say, "ooooooh what talent," as if that performance is the result of some magic we call "talent" instead of years of practice. Somehow concert pianos are capable of incredible touch and magnificent tone by magic! And will stay that way forever, also by magic.

The problem of course is if the person making the decision in this case is not a pianist and has never played (or worked on) a piano, they are much more prone to believing in magical happenings.

I like the race car analogy in another way too. The race car has a pit crew and and entire garage full of tools and mechanics to keep it in optimal racing condition. Every body knows about the pit crew.

Congratulations. You and what you do are invisible to 98% of administrators and audience goers!

I would also agree that it is the action that will obviously, and inarguably suffer. The board, I dunno, but the strings yes.

Sorry for the rant.

Alan
