David,

I’m Soooo sorry. Brain dead over here.

I hope someone does comment because it sure seems strange to me.

Again, Very sorry!

That would be David but it seems counterintuitive in one sense. The fish is
designed to make it stiffer but it can be too stiff relative to mass
evidently. Maybe someone with more theoretical knowledge can comment.

Dale,

I’m confused. If the purpose of the treble fish is to add
stiffness why would you want to thin the board behind the bridge and before
the fish? Is that negating the effect of the fish? I thought that the whole
idea of the fish was to make a tighter system up there? Would thinning
loosen it? Isn’t the purpose of the mass weighting to add even more
tightness / stiffness/ lack of flexibility?

Where did they add it exactly? Del has contributed to this topic before and
I wonder if he had anything to do with that. One other note, if you are
able to know about how much mass loading in advance you can also bury some
lead in the bridge body before you recap it. For us mortals, however, it
seems to be more of a trial and error thing to find out how much you need
exactly. I’m not really adding the treble fish these days on soundboard
projects and without that I haven’t found that mass loading is necessary. I
also wonder on pianos with treble fish if thinning the board behind the
treble bridge will reduce the need for weighting since it reduces the
effective stiffness.

David,
Baldwin did some production on their model 7000 with ading (weighted) mass
to the board.
Augmented the upper registers very efficiently. Yet another innovative
design from the original Baldwin folk.
