A month or so ago I mentioned an excellent article by Patrizio Barbieri concerning the history of temperaments pertaining to the time of the piano, from the Routledge Piano - an Encyclopedia. I contacted Barbieri, and he was happy for me to post his article, but said he had sold it under contract to the publisher, so I needed to get permission from them. The publisher wanted over $500 for a license to post the article on the web, even under the members only section of ptg.org (it's an automated system, not an actual person you deal with). However, I discovered that most of this encyclopedia is posted on line, free of charge. Barbieri's articles on temperament and on the Italian piano industry are exceptions, for which one has to pay a premium. The first sample page is displayed, remainder on paying a fee. The fee is $5.99. Following is the URL: http://www.bookrags.com/tandf/temperamentshistorical-tf/ There are many fascinating articles in this encyclopedia, a great resource. Strange about a few articles being restricted. Regards, Fred Sturm University of New Mexico fssturm at unm.edu
