[CAUT] Root beer damage

Sprite is worse…somebody poured a whole can over all the dampers on a Baldwin SF we have here. Stealth damage. I couldn’t see any residue but it was gunked to high-heaven. I had to re-do the dampers and put all new parts in the action. The bass strings obviously had to be replaced but the treble wire was ok as long as none of the sprite got into the agraffe…one tiny drop in an agraffe is enough to completely kill the note and there was no way I could find to clean it out without replacing the wire. I hope the person who did it feels guilty about it the rest of his/her life…

At least it missed the bass strings. I had a full set go dead from just a sprinkling of some sort of soda. The sprinkling came from a spill on top (lid closed) of a Yamaha U-1. Some leaked through the hinge area. You wouldn't think, with the placement of that hinge, that much would splatter to the strings, and not much did (visual inspection), but the strings were dead dull. Had to be replaced. I cleaned up the hammers and dampers well enough for function. They just had drips here and there on them.

John,

While we’re sharing pictures…

Of course it’s not coffee here at BYU, but root beer can also do a number on a UST7. (Two weeks ago in a dorm)
