[CAUT] PTG Dues

Writing it off your income tax is certainly a good way to do this. I
think if your Department pays for the dues you do not have to claim the
amount as income. It's like when an institution reimburses for mileage
at the IRS rate, the employee does not have to claim the reimbursement
as income. On the other hand, the employee cannot "double dip" by
claiming the same reimbursed mileage on his/her income tax, as you well
know. However, the net amount of savings is more by having the
institution reimburse the actual money than if you took it off your
income tax. I should think the same thing would apply for dues. I
think it would be worth checking into. If you have line items in the
departmental budget you could check with the Chair about including this
reimbursement in one of the line items. It is definitely an advantage
for the department for you to be in PTG...the information gleaned from
the magazine; being able to attend the Convention and seminars, etc.

Joy!

Me thinks I'll just write it off as I do outside tunings occasionally.
It was just a wild thought ;>)

That strikes me as kind of like asking an employer to pay your union
dues :)... not quite the best analogy but not the worst either me
thinks. As to courses and seminars... depends on the situation. If the

school is has some direct benefit from some particular training I get...

then I talk to them about it and either they do or dont. Most of these
things are tax deductible and if I am not mistaken you cant mix your P's

and Q' there. If you get support... you have to declare it as income
over here and don't get to deduct that amount as an expense. Sometimes
its just not worth the bother of all the paperwork to do anything but
just pay for it yourself.

Cheers

   List,

I have a quick question; Have any of you asked the schools of music
to
reimburse part or all of your PTG dues as ongoing education?

   Thanks for any input...
