[CAUT] hamburg and Ny

I am by no means the authoritive on the subject, but I do know that
there is a difference between the thickness of the two soundboards,
Hamburg uses non lacquered hammers, and that the Hamburg dries their
boards less then the NY before ribbing. I understand also (but do not
know for sure) that the Hamburg indexes its action differently which
supposedly accounts for why Hamburg actions display more consistent
geometry (if indeed that is also the case).

Previously Hamburg used a different combination of ply material for
their rims, but now both utilize the same, and my understanding is that
recently Hamburg was required to utilize the same variety of wood for
their soundboards and ribs. I can not confirm either of these claims
for certain either. I am sure others will provide more information.

Cheers

I'd like some input in the differences between NY and Hamburg
Steinways. I realize the Hamburg has a lot more hours in building
compared to the NY. When I look at the two, I can see the Hamburg
seems quite a different beast. Does Hamburg make their plates the
same as NY...cast? Would a Hamburg hammer be appropriate for a NY
piano? I'm sure it has been tried but what did it sound like?

    Thanks...
