Fred,

You are right about interaction in the piano. Everything in the piano's
acoustic system interacts with everything else. Whether or not tuning the
piano will make the overall inharmonicity of individual strings be lower,
I'm not so sure.

But of one thing I am sure. When I was doing my experiments with
longitudinal modes and their coupling to and from transverse modes, I found
it impossible to get conclusive results from a real piano. There were just
too many things interacting all at the same time. When I started using a
long monochord with lots of mass, rigid terminations, and separate
transducers for transverse and longitudinal vibrations, I was able to sort
it out.
