Why did Edison mess with tunston steel.  Candles and oil lamps worked just 
fine!

I don't get it. Why not bypass all the angst and just use an 
ethanol and water mix? You have some idea what's in ethanol, 
though the water may be suspect, it works fine and evaporates 
with minimal drama, leaving nothing potentially corrosive to 
the strings, or leaving hammers prone to future petrification 
or other surprise mutations.
